Altar in the Cloud, Blackout on the Ground: The Power Arbitrage of Hyperscalers

The essence of tech monopoly is socializing systemic risk while privatizing the power of interpretation.

The Google Cloud outage has once again ripped off the veil of the digital world: our so-called 'cloud' is nothing more than physical cables and cooling fans in some decrepit data centers in London or Virginia. When banks freeze, courts pause, and NHS apps glitch, people habitually dismiss it as a 'technical failure.' In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is classic structural violence. The violence isn't the power cut; it's the fact that the underlying logic of social operation is monopolized by a few Hyperscalers, leaving public services defenseless against a single 'power event' from a private corporation.

The most cynical complicity lies with the UK government. Despite knowing that hosting sensitive data on Azure or Google Cloud exposes them to US government surveillance and systemic crashes, they still outsource 60% of their infrastructure. This isn't a lack of alternatives, but a complicity of path dependency: the government trades digital sovereignty for short-term operational convenience. The reward for this complicity is that when the system crashes, the blame is shifted to 'third-party facilities' while power remains firmly in the hands of the giants.

A deeper Meta Violence is hidden in the narrative of AI-generated code. Google's claim that 75% of new code is AI-generated is packaged as an 'efficiency revolution' in PR, but in engineering, it's the replacement of human accountability with an algorithmic black box. When AWS outages were linked to AI tooling, we witnessed a weaponized expression: using 'AI-driven' to mask the collapse of professional expertise following mass layoffs. They are attempting to manufacture a reality where AI can maintain infrastructure. The actual reality? AI can write the code, but humans suffer the blackout.

The losers in this existential war are the ordinary people whose digital lives are hosted in a few corporate 'zones.' These Hyperscalers have seized the pricing power over social operation by creating the 'Too big to fail' fact. In the next outage, they will again post a polite status dashboard analysis, and then continue to collect their fees with total impunity.
