The Unemployment PR Scam and the Vanishing Vacancies
当Potential(潜在机会)在快速缩减,Actual(实际状态)的微小提升不过是缓刑。
The unemployment rate dropping from 4.9% to 4.7% is a 'boost' for politicians and 'better than expected' for City economists. But move your gaze from this single digit to the collapse of Vacancies, and you'll see a classic weaponisation of narrative. Vacancies have plummeted below 700,000, a low since 2021. The system is simply stopping the manufacture of possibilities.
This is a sinister game: employment is up, but the will to hire is shrinking. This suggests that current 'employment' is likely a low-quality struggle over existing slots or people being forced into low-wage roles. As small firms stop recruiting due to rising labour costs, the individual's bargaining power in the labour market is stripped away. You may have a job, but you've lost the power to choose that job. This is textbook Structural Violence.
The irony is that this 'good news' is being used to endorse Chancellor John Healey. The logic that 'falling unemployment' equals 'economic health' is a projection of masculine-centric narrative into economics—prioritising macro-level, numerical 'victories' while ignoring the existential anxiety of individuals facing a vanishing job market. When Potential is shrinking rapidly, a slight uptick in Actual is merely a stayed execution.
Don't be fooled by that 4.7%. A market that stops creating vacancies is essentially a cage closing its entrance.
