Turning Public Assets into Private Shrines: Trump's Narrative of Conquest

The ultimate pleasure of power lies not in possession, but in forcibly redefining others' assets as one's own will.

Felling 430 trees is direct violence at the physical level, but at the structural level, it is a classic asset seizure. Trump is attempting to pivot the East Potomac Golf Links from a public good to a private enclave. The core issue here isn't golf; it's the weaponisation of the 'right to define.' For a power-player steeped in masculine-centric narrative, public assets are not for maintenance—they are for conquest.

This is an aggressive form of expression: by bypassing oversight and court orders, he seeks to fold National Park Service resources into his own brand ventures. He isn't pursuing a better course, but a shrine bearing his name. When a public space is forced to revolve around one man's vanity project, its a-priori nature is erased, replaced by meta violence—the assertion that 'my will supersedes all established rules.'

This logic is isomorphic to that of the colonizer: marking land that isn't theirs as their own to derive existential pleasure. If successful, DC becomes a giant Graceland, a field of personal worship maintained by fans and complicity. This migration from 'public history' to 'personal monument' is essentially a war over the right to interpretation. He doesn't care if the course is championship-level; he cares that it wasn't his, but he can make it so through power.
