Identity Piracy and the Hollowed-out Subjectivity
This so-called "Agatha Christie-style mystery" is essentially a low-end plunder of the right to expression. In the logic of the first chapter, expression is the confirmation of existence; it is the declaration of "who I am." But with the intervention of Generative AI, expression has been decomposed into a replicable pattern. Fake Linda doesn't need to become Linda; she only needs to use AI to simulate Linda's "expression style" and "professional background" to deceive editors at the cognitive entry point. This is a malignant identity scam: the thief isn't stealing a wallet, but the credit assets built over decades by a professional.
The most ironic part is the reaction of the New York Post—after being informed of the identity theft, they actually asked the real Linda to provide information to "verify her identity." In this structure, a person's authenticity no longer depends on their Biological Wall or long-term social relations, but on whether they hold an email address from a specific domain. When verification mechanisms become a reliance on "digital credentials," human subjectivity is hollowed out. You are no longer you; you are merely an account that satisfies a verification protocol.
This phenomenon reveals a new form of structural violence: AI lowers the cost of disguise, shifting the cost of trust onto the real laborers. As the Nature editor noted, such fraud further squeezes the survival space for early-career freelancers, because "trust" becomes a privilege reserved for "old faces" recognized by the established power structure. This is a form of complicity—platforms sacrifice verification for efficiency, fraudsters profit from the loophole, and the final bill is paid by real individuals struggling for an optimal expression in the existential war.
