Wounds Beneath the Punk Narrative: Who Defines a Girl's 'Chaos'?

Romanticizing female suffering as 'teenage chaos' is a sophisticated form of cultural violence.

这部电影试图在 Stockport 的后朋克背景下勾勒一个少女的 self-portrait,但最耐人寻味的是评论者将其描述为“青春期混乱的研习”(a study in the chaos of being young)。

The film attempts to sketch a self-portrait of a young woman against the post-punk backdrop of Stockport, but the most telling part is the reviewer's description of it as "a study in the chaos of being young." In a masculine-centric narrative, a girl's pain, her bullying, and her expulsion from school are often packaged as an aesthetic "chaos" or "growing pains," effectively erasing the structural violence behind these experiences.

Ann's attempt to "cauterize" her agony by imitating Joy Division is a game of expression. She seeks existence within a music scene defined by men, only to be effortlessly shut out by power-holders like Tony Wilson. This exclusion is not accidental; in the cognitive portals of that era, women were meant to be backgrounds or objects of consumption, never the creators.

Most disturbing is the narrative of suicide. The film contrasts three deaths, noting that only Ian Curtis's was not a "shame-filled cover-up." This reveals a brutal meta-violence: a man's collapse can be transformed into a legend or an artistic symbol, while a woman's collapse—especially within the domestic sphere—must be hidden because her pain lacks the "value" to be acknowledged in public space.

Ann eventually buries her pain in depression and drinking. While critics find this poignant, I see it as the inevitable result of a subjectivity crushed under a system of complicity. When a girl finds that her true optimal expression receives no just response from reality, she is forced to complete a pathological expression through self-destruction.
