This castrated form of expression is not a right; it is a performance permitted by power.
Violence = Potential − Actual. The Potential for the French people was a social model providing basic opportunity and security; the Actual is high prices, shabby schools, and a fraying safety net. This vast gap is structural violence. When this structural violence manifests as police brutality—such as the 15-year-old who lost a hand—it becomes direct violence.
The ultimate complicity lies in how power, after inflicting direct violence, attempts to reclaim the moral narrative through a performative concession: 'suspending the use of a certain stun grenade'. The Interior Minister's decision is not born of conscience, but because the level of violence has exceeded the threshold that the cultural layer can mask, causing the narrative to collapse. This 'correction' is itself an operation of meta-violence: I define what is 'excessive', therefore I define what is 'just'.
These protests began in the schools of Paris's northern suburbs, the dead zones where biological walls and class walls overlap. Students demanded basic learning conditions; power responded with stun grenades. When a system must sever a child's hand to maintain 'order', that order itself is the ultimate scam.
