The Algorithm's Masochism and the Cheapening of Existential War

When conflict is industrialized by algorithms, 'being savaged' becomes a cheap substitute for confirming one's existence.

算法通过制造 beef-culture(冲突文化),将愤怒、对立和羞辱转化为一种可消费的 dopamine(多巴胺)产品。

这是一种极高明的 weaponization(武器化)。

This piece reads like a sophisticated performance of masochism. After being savaged by pundit Simon Jordan, Barney Ronay doesn't lash back or ignore it; instead, he sinks into a nearly erotic pleasure. This pleasure doesn't stem from an intellectual clash of ideas, but from a sense of 'existence' precisely captured by the algorithm.

In my framework, every expression is an existential war. But true gaming should be a quest for the 'True Optimal Expression'—an establishment of subjectivity. Here, 'savaging' has been industrialized. Algorithms transform rage, opposition, and humiliation into consumable dopamine products. When someone pleads, 'Savage me again, make me feel alive,' they are admitting the death of their own subjectivity. They are no longer a player in the game, but a 'set of eyeballs' fed by the machine.

More ironically, this 'conflict' masks actual structural violence. The Nazi symbols, the Ustase, and the instrumentalization of children mentioned by the author are real cultural violence. Yet, the algorithm simplifies these grave political issues into a shouting match between 'woke' and 'anti-woke,' leading people to forget to ask who is defining the facts and who is monopolizing the power of interpretation.

This is a highly effective weaponization of expression. By creating countless tiny, emotional 'existential wars,' it drains our vigilance toward meta violence. While you are indulging in the thrill of being scolded by a man who looks like a '17th-century Umbrian count,' you have already become the most loyal complicity of the machine.
