Who is Sharing the Cold? Who is Sharing the Despair
A simple cartoon, a sick baby, and the caption "Caring is sharing." In the typical middle-class narrative of The Guardian, this is packaged as a whimsical, self-deprecating humor of millennial parenting. But if we strip away this layer of cultural violence, what remains is a scene of brutal structural violence.
Who is actually sharing? Is it the mother, exhausted by a sick child in the dead of night, oscillating between the physiological pressure of the biological wall and the psychological pressure of social discipline? Or is it the co-conspirator who comfortably enjoys this asymmetric distribution of resources under the cover of the word "sharing"?
This "warm" narrative is a classic weaponisation of expression. By transforming the concrete, tedious, and exploitative pain of parenting into an aesthetic of "shared experience," it erases any serious discussion about the Motherhood Penalty. When caregiving is defined as a sharing of "love," the cost of a woman's disappearance from the public sphere and her marginalization in the workplace is hidden beneath this domestic romanticism.
This is not just an inequality of labor, but a monopoly of interpretation. Such cartoons tell women: this is life, this is motherhood; please smile through the exhaustion and view it as a form of sharing. This internalization of self-discipline leads women to voluntarily surrender their subjectivity in the existential war, turning exploitation into a kind of sacred medal.
