Frieze: Turning Structural Violence into Expensive Spectacles
Frieze, as a top-tier art fair, is essentially a game of defining the narrative. The artworks this year are fascinating; they precisely capture various forms of violence in contemporary society, but the act of capturing is itself a form of weaponization. Artists have packaged the industrial sexual exploitation of OnlyFans, the corporate manipulation of the US healthcare system, and the passive objectification of the female body into polished installations. Culturally, this achieves a dangerous substitution: converting structural violence into an aesthetic experience.
Most ironic are Yuli Serfaty’s headless metallic dogs. They attempt to explore the extreme state of the female body being devalued and exploited through a surreal lens. However, when this "exploited body" is placed in an expensive gallery booth to be critiqued as a "satirical edge" by collectors, it enters a death loop: art critiques exploitation, while the art market itself leverages that critique for capital appreciation. This is a textbook case of complicity—the power class confirms its own civility and tolerance by consuming the "critique of power."
As for the urinal cakes designed like chastity devices, this expression merely utilizes the erotic narrative as a cognitive entry point to create a gimmick. It attempts to provoke, but in a capital-dense environment like Frieze, such provocation inevitably devolves into a high-brow "taste" game used for class distinction. In this context, real suffering is stripped away, leaving only a performative pleasure labeled as "profundity."
Fortunately, the rediscovery of forgotten female narratives like Luce Turnier represents a minor shift in the meta-level of interpretation. Beyond that, however, most works repeat a single logic: use violence as raw material, commodify it, and sell it back to the very people who manufacture that violence. This is not breaking the chains; it is gilding them.
