校园枪击案:被掩盖在“无意义”之下的男性暴力逻辑School Shooting: The Masculine Logic of Violence Hidden Behind 'Senselessness'
Whenever these stories break, the public tends to frame them as 'senseless' or a 'tragedy.' This is exactly where cultural violence operates: by defining violence as 'senseless,' it is successfully transformed from a structural issue into a random lottery of fate. If killing is senseless, we only need to pray it isn't our turn next time, rather than dismantling why a 16-year-old boy could easily execute a miniature massacre in a school.
In this instance of direct violence, the victims include three boys and a 25-year-old female teacher, Megan Lambert. Note the narrative detail: Megan is described as 'passionate about sports,' 'coaching for free,' and full of compassion. This narrative subconsciously casts the woman as the pure 'nourisher' and 'victim,' while the perpetrator—a 16-year-old male—becomes a black hole in the story. He isn't given a specific motive because, in a masculine-centric narrative, male aggression is defaulted as a biological, uncontrollable natural disaster.
In reality, this is an extreme alienation of the existential war. A 16-year-old boy, lacking a stable establishment of identity during adolescence, chose the most extreme form of expression to seize attention and power. By stripping others of their lives, he attempted to forcibly carve his existence into the physical world. The complicity of society lies in the fact that we prefer to discuss 'gun control'—a structural patch—rather than the masculine power logic that views 'destroying others' as a means of 'establishing the self.'
When a 16-year-old boy can turn a school into a hunting ground, it is a manifestation of meta violence: the assumption that males possess the privilege to define and execute violence, only to be simplified as 'mental health issues' afterward. Megan's death is packaged as the fall of a kind soul, but the real question is why this destructive masculine expression is granted such an easy entry ticket into our culture.
