The most nauseating part of this case isn't the individual acts of abuse, but the existence of the 'Teflon' immunity. When an officer nicknamed 'rapey' by his own colleagues can climb the promotional ladder—even landing a leadership role in 'tackling violence against women'—we are not looking at 'bad investigations' or administrative errors. This is textbook structural violence.
In the Devon and Cornwall police force, the masculine-centric narrative has been weaponized into a high-level defensive fortification. Abusers leveraged the force's 'reputation' to break the will of their victims, turning domestic abuse into a perverse 'privilege game' within the system. While victims begged for help, the system handed out promotions. Every link in this chain—from the investigators who ignored reports to the leadership who signed off on promotions—is an act of complicity.
It is peak irony that the force, after paying out and apologizing, still refuses to admit liability and denies any evidence of misogyny. This PR rhetoric is pure cultural violence: by denying intent, they dilute systemic gender oppression into mere 'procedural failings.'
The compensation is little more than hush money. The meta-violence remains intact. As long as the police prioritize the 'decency' of their male colleagues over the lives of women, and as long as that 'Teflon layer' exists to protect abusers, any 'process improvement' is nothing more than a fresh coat of paint on a hellhole.
