This narrative is a textbook example of cultural violence; by defining violence as "random" and "incomprehensible," it successfully masks the reality of structural violence. When a 16-year-old can effortlessly blast through school doors with a shotgun purchased by his mother to kill three children and a teacher, it is not "senseless"—it is a precise systemic output.
The most nauseating part is the praise for the bystander who "heroically intervened." The governor and mayor, amidst the ritualism of a candlelit vigil, package the clash of individual violence as heroism. This is a dangerous complicity: by glorifying a random citizen's "gunfight victory," they erase the total paralysis of the system in protecting children. If safety depends on a random armed passerby happening to be in the right place, the actual safety baseline of this society is zero.
This event exposes the meta-violence logic of US school shootings: an extreme masculine-centric narrative. In this framework, firearms are extensions of power, and massacres are reduced to individual psychological breakdowns. In reality, this is structural—from lax gun laws to the tolerance of adolescent male aggression, and finally to a public discourse filled with "prayers" and "broken hearts." This loop ensures that the "possibility" of the next massacre remains intact.
Potential − Actual = Violence. Children should have had 100% safety in school, but the Actual was being torn apart by a shotgun. This massive gap is the violence this system manufactures every single day.
