Diagnosis is Not Salvation, But a Confirmation Letter of Structural Violence

A label is not relief; it is often just a cognitive entry point created for management.

These letters reveal a brutal truth: in the healthcare system, diagnosis has been alienated into a pure game of taxonomy. For Rebecca, receiving an autism diagnosis at 51 merely "explained her life" without "helping her live it." This is classic structural violence—the system provides a label to make the individual feel "seen," offering a cheap psychological consolation while actual resource allocation remains stagnant. The gap between Potential and Actual is the violence cost of long-term exploitation of neurodivergent people.

There is a deeper complicity in the attempt to "medicalize" everything. John Bryant's question is piercing: if the problems are tied to social changes, why is it primarily a healthcare issue? When society defines those who don't fit "standard productivity" as having a "disorder," it is exercising meta-violence by defining "normalcy." This narrative transforms the conflict between the individual and the environment into a pathological defect of the brain. Consequently, governments and power structures avoid addressing the monopoly of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) or the cruelty of the job market; they simply slap a label on the victim and tell them: "You are ill, please wait patiently in the queue."

This "diagnosis-waiting-void" loop is a highly efficient management scam. It exhausts the weak in their pursuit of identity confirmation, while the complicitors—from the bureaucratic NHS to the medical establishment—maintain a monopoly over the right of interpretation under the guise of "professionalism." When a 70-year-old woman is only recognized as potentially having ADHD post-menopause, what she lost was not just a diagnosis, but decades of her subjectivity being structurally erased.
