The So-called 'Resilience' is Just a Moat for Bank Privileges
Chancellor John Healey's performance in Bangkok is a textbook case of weaponized expression. By describing banks as the "jewel in the crown" and claiming they are "hardwired" into the economic fabric, he is strategically equating the interests of a specific power group (Big Banks) with the baseline of national survival (Resilience).
When we discuss 'resilience' through the lens of the Violence Triangle, we should ask if the gap between Potential and Actual is shrinking. Instead, Healey uses resilience as a shield for structural violence. The TUC data reveals that tax cuts for big banks deprived the government of £6bn. This capital could have been diverted to healthcare or education, but it remains as bank profit. In this complicity, the 'strength' of banks is rebranded as national resilience, while the 'breathing space' for citizens struggling with energy costs is reduced to a mere PR slogan.
It is profoundly ironic that Healey uses the same 'destiny' logic for banks as he does for Ukraine's role in European security. The essence of this logic is that the holders of power must not suffer, because their loss is defined as a systemic collapse. This is a masculine-centric narrative: a few elites set the rules, the public absorbs the risk, and the elites' gains are framed as a collective victory.
The promised 'breathing space' is nothing more than a performative concession after structural extraction. True resilience is found in the just distribution of resources, not in allowing the 'jewels in the crown' to continue bleeding the system dry while calling it national competitiveness.
