CBS's 'Professionalism': A Perfect Performance of Complicity

Using 'professionalism' to mask power shifts is a classic meta-violence narrative manipulation.

Sir Trevor Phillips's blunt "fuck off" at the CBS internal meeting isn't a defense of press freedom; it's a baptism of 'professionalism' for a power coup. When billionaire David Ellison installed Bari Weiss—a figure of intense ideological bias—as editor-in-chief, the editorial scales of CBS were physically tilted. Now, Phillips deploys concepts like "objectivity" and "having each other's backs" to construct a closed field of complicity.

This narrative is insidious: it repackages the leadership's threats (disobeying equals firing) as "common sense," and frames external concerns about ideological drift as mere "interference" intended to frighten them. In this logic, any staffer questioning editorial independence is labeled "vulnerable" for failing to play the "new game." This is textbook cultural violence—redefining "professionalism" and "loyalty" to make structural oppression look like team spirit.

Phillips's "new game" is actually a war for the monopoly of interpretation. When an organization responds to questions of integrity by saying "just let us do our jobs," it is announcing that the power to define truth has shifted. The internal co-conspirators must now trade their silence for a ticket to survive in this new structure. This isn't journalism; it's using the facade of the industry to provide a cover of "objectivity" for the will of capital.
