Low-End Service 'Ladders' as a Mask for Welfare Violence

The so-called 'employment ladder' is essentially a harvest of cheap labor under structural violence.

Packaging 100,000 hospitality jobs as a 'first step' for NEET youth is a textbook example of weaponized expression. What does a four-week placement at Wagamama or Burger King actually offer? Not skills, but an initiation into being objectified in low-end services and accepting a total lack of bargaining power. This isn't a ladder; it's a funnel designed to filter the structurally disadvantaged into the cheapest possible consumables.

What's truly alarming is the complicity at play. The government, fast-food giants, and welfare departments have formed a pact: use a 'nice' employment scheme as a shield to mask the real objective—slashing the benefits bill. The report explicitly mentions considering the scrapping of critical disability benefits for under-25s. The message is clear: if you can't climb this fake ladder, you lose your safety net. This is structural violence in its purest form—creating a low-bar 'opportunity' to label those who still can't work as 'unmotivated,' thereby justifying the withdrawal of social support.

This logic operates seamlessly under meta violence. Whether it's Labour or the Conservatives, the debate isn't about the root causes of youth unemployment, but about how to 'cut welfare' to fund defense spending. In their narrative, the survival rights of young people are reduced to figures on a fiscal balance sheet. The promised 'brighter future' is simply the low-cost integration of youth into the labor market to serve as biological batteries for the service industry.
