Diversity Narratives as Painkillers for Structural Violence

Using a few top-tier artists to mask the systemic collapse of grassroots cultural spaces.

而与此同时,基层文化空间正面临资金匮乏和 gentrification(士绅化)的挤压。

所谓的“多元英国”叙事,如果不能解决 sustainability(可持续性)和 growth(增长)的问题,就只是一个巨大的 PR scam。

Fifty years ago, Naseem Khan exposed the British arts establishment's collective ignorance of ethnic minorities. Today, we see artists like Anish Kapoor canonized, and multiculturalism packaged as a national brand. This is textbook cultural violence: by installing a few 'success stories' at the top, the system makes systemic exclusion look like a solved historical problem.

The real violence isn't about whether diversity is recognized, but who holds the power to define 'success.' When the new chair of Arts Council England speaks of 'responsibility' and 'action,' it is a form of weaponized expression. It transforms structural plunder into a narrative of moral self-redemption. Meanwhile, grassroots cultural spaces are being crushed by financial pressure and gentrification. This proves the system doesn't care about diversity itself; it only cares about how to 'productize' it and absorb it into its own canon.

This is a sinister complicity. The establishment grants fame to a few artists of color in exchange for the legitimate right to strip away the survival of community-based culture. While a Black painter exhibits in a top gallery, countless community arts centers are demolished by developers. This 'progress' is a performative concession; it doesn't shrink the gap between Potential and Actual, but uses visible, point-like success to hide a planar, structural decay.

The 'Diverse Britain' narrative is a massive PR scam unless it addresses sustainability and growth. It tricks the marginalized into believing they have entered the system, when in reality, they have merely become ornaments used by the system to prove its own 'justice.'
