Accident” is the Cheapest Shroud of Masculine-Centric Narrative

When violence is defined as an 'accident', the loop of structural meta-violence is completed.

An 18-year-old pointed an air rifle at his friend's head and fired because he 'mistook the trigger for the safety catch'. The coroner ruled it an 'accident', and the police took 'no further action'. This is a textbook case of complicity between the judicial system and masculine-centric narrative.

Within the Violence Triangle, this is far more than direct violence. At the structural layer, the casual storage of weapons in a cupboard and the normalization of using them as 'fun' toys under the influence of alcohol is a form of structural violence. The most critical cultural violence, however, is the rapid packaging of this event as 'youthful recklessness' or a 'tragic accident' because it occurred within a male peer group.

This logic is driven by meta-violence: men are permitted to possess and manipulate tools of violence in both public and private spaces. Even when such manipulation leads to death, the system prefers to interpret it as a 'technical error' rather than a 'behavioral consequence'. Had this occurred between women, or if a man had done this to a woman, the narrative entry would immediately shift to 'mental instability' or 'premeditated murder'.

The word 'accident' serves as a passport for the complicity of the system. It erases the potential violence inherent in the moment the gun was pointed at someone's head. By habitually forgiving this 'recklessness among brothers', society confirms a privilege: men may play with violence, and the cost is borne by the victim and paid for by the label of 'accident'.
