In the U.S., where faith-based narratives have been monopolized by white evangelicals to sustain white supremacy and GOP interests, religion has been weaponized as a tool of cultural violence, making structural oppression appear as "divine will."
Haynes is interesting because he doesn't counter this with secular, de-religious democratic discourse. Instead, he chooses "reverse weaponization" on the opponent's own turf. He realizes that for many marginalized groups, religion is not a shackle but their only space for expression. If progressives retreat entirely from the realm of faith, they effectively hand over this cognitive entry point to figures like Trump—who is "anti-Christ" in essence yet sanctified in narrative.
However, we must be wary. The shift from being a "tree shaker" to a "jelly maker" is essentially a gamble in the existential war. Entering the system means surviving within a field of complicity at the structural layer. While he advocates for universal healthcare, the abolition of ICE, and condemns the genocide in Gaza, he is attempting to close the gap between Potential and Actual. But systemic inertia is immense; a prophet's expression in a congressional seat can easily be converted into a performative concession, neutralizing the radical power he held on the pulpit.
Is this victory good_news? If he can use this seat to actually transfer the power of interpretation and provide a platform for the silenced, then it is progress at the meta layer. Otherwise, he is merely another high-value soundbite recruited by the Democratic establishment to maintain a facade of "diversity."
