舞池里的肉体定价权与性别表演The Pricing of Flesh and Gender Performance in the Ballroom
Reading the live log of Strictly Come Dancing, the most absurd part isn't the choreography, but the deep-seated masculine-centric narrative. When the judges tell Johannes that "Talent needs no permission," it sounds like a compliment, but it is a classic exercise of meta-violence: in a masculine-centric narrative, men are defined as the natural carriers of 'talent,' and their breakthroughs are seen as the release of innate gift, while women are told to "come out of her shell."
This asymmetry of expression is repulsive. When Lacey Turner faces pressure, the narrative entry is her 'nervousness' and 'hesitation'; yet when male dancers showcase personality and swagger, it is defined as 'striking the right balance between personality and technique.' This is exactly how expression is weaponized: men hold the pricing power to define what is 'cool' or 'talented,' while women are objectified as 'showgirls' or 'queens,' their value measured by how well they fulfill a pre-set, consumerist identity.
Most ironic are the 'exposed pecs.' From Mark to Kai, the exposure of the male body is treated as a natural display of power, even joked about as a 'button shortage.' Meanwhile, Will Best being fully clothed is called 'thankfully,' as if he finally stopped using his body as a shield. In this space, the male body is an extension of subjectivity, while the female body is an object of the gaze. This complicity exists among judges, audience, and dancers alike, maintaining a 'civilized' ballroom that actually reinforces the power hierarchy behind the biological wall through aesthetic filtering.
