Zuckerberg's Metrics: A High-Efficiency Meta-Violence
Zuckerberg's logic is brutally simple: if something cannot be converted into metrics, it does not exist in his world. This is not a personality flaw or social awkwardness; it is a high-efficiency form of meta-violence. In this masculine-centric narrative, real human suffering—especially the experiences of victims that cannot be quickly quantified or reflected in growth curves—is defined as 'meaningless.'
Arturo Béjar's experience reveals a cruel mechanism of complicity within Meta: even if you have the most advanced tools to reduce harm, those tools will be swiftly killed by the review process if they interfere with growth or affect the experience of certain celebrities. In this structure, the wellbeing team's efforts are merely a PR shield. The actual decision logic is: as long as the probability of harm remains below an acceptable metric threshold, that harm is a 'reasonable cost.'
Most repulsive is the weaponisation of this narrative. Meta uses a romanticised narrative of 'connecting the world' to mask its essentially predatory design. It turns teenagers' bedrooms into hallways for strangers to wander into, while claiming in public statements to be 'empowering parents.' This use of cultural violence to camouflage structural violence is a classic Silicon Valley scam.
The $18bn settlement and the so-called 'safety improvements' can be tagged as good_news, as the Actual has moved a step closer to the Potential. But do not be naive. For a behemoth with $200bn in revenue, this is a minor operational cost. The real victory is not the money, but the fact that internal co-conspirators like Béjar chose to defect, tearing a hole in this 'metrics-first' meta-violence and forcing the public to realise: in the power structure of algorithms, you are not a user; you are merely harvested biological data.
