The 'Awakening' of Kiwifruit Skin and Manufactured Disgust

Aesthetic preference is often internalized cultural violence; 'discomfort' is the result of conditioning.

作者提到的那个词很关键:prejudice(偏见)。

A man nearing 60 marveling in The Guardian that kiwifruit skin is edible seems like a light lifestyle piece, but to me, it is a micro-sample of 'aesthetic conditioning.' The author uses a key word: prejudice. Why do we feel an instinctive disgust toward a certain phenotype—like the brown, furry skin of a kiwi?

This is essentially cultural violence. In dominant aesthetic narratives, food is required to be 'clean' and fit a specific visual logic. We are trained to accept smooth phenotypes like oranges or bananas, while defining 'furry' as unclean or inedible. This screening of phenotypes is an extension of meta violence in daily life: defining what is 'correct' and what 'should be discarded.'

The most ironic part is the 'easy peelers' label. Corporations manufacture the act of 'peeling' as a necessary chore, then sell 'convenience' by offering products that make this removal easier. This is a weaponized narrative: first, use cultural cues to make you view the skin as waste, then sell you a solution to 'dispose of waste' more efficiently. When you habituate the act of peeling, you aren't just removing fiber; you are removing your biological intuition.

Fortunately, this 'discovery' narrows the gap between Potential and Actual—people realize they've been limited by an invisible aesthetic wall. But don't expect a revolution; most will still react like the author's mother, gagging when faced with a broken rule. Internalized conditioning is always harder to dismantle than a physical wall.
