Cambridge's PR Investigation and the Anatomy of Institutional Murder
Cambridge University is treating a professor's death as a 'review of institutional processes.' In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is a textbook case of using the cultural layer to camouflage structural violence. By expanding the scope to 'wider contexts' and 'general appraisals,' the university is diluting a concrete process of destruction—fueled by racism and ableism—into a neutral, academic management issue.
This is a sinister form of weaponized expression: by defining the scope of the investigation, they are defining what constitutes 'fact.' When the university prioritizes 'support mechanisms' over 'decision-making responsibility,' it signals that Arday's death was a result of inadequate support (individual misfortune) rather than the fact that he was weaponized as a 'diversity' symbol and then discarded (structural exploitation).
Publicizing Arday as the 'youngest black professor' was itself a weaponized expression. The university used his identity for PR to manufacture an illusion of progress, but the moment the symbol cracked, the institutional protection vanished. This rapid shift from 'icon' to 'outcast' is a manifestation of meta-violence—he was never treated as a subject, but as a priced commodity.
The protest by 40 academics is crucial because they are attempting to drag the investigation away from the sanitized language of 'lessons learned' and back to the 'chain of responsibility.' They are demanding pinpointing, not general appraisals. Only by identifying who gave the orders and who remained silent during the racist abuse can the complicity be exposed. If the result is merely a suggestion to 'optimize recruitment,' the investigation itself becomes an extension of the structural violence.
