Poetry as Asylum, System as Complicity

Legal protection is not benevolence, but a hedge between different layers of violence.

Cecilia Vicuña’s story is packaged as a romantic narrative of 'poetry saving a life,' which is exactly how cultural violence masks structural irony. A 24-year-old South American woman granted asylum by showing a poetry book to judges, while the British government simultaneously acknowledged and celebrated the Pinochet regime—the embodiment of direct violence. This is not a victory for art; it is a precise hedge at the structural level. The UK government can collude with dictators in diplomacy while performing the role of a 'civilized' protector in judicial proceedings. This contradiction is a weaponized narrative of civilization, allowing Britain to maintain its cognitive entry as a 'defender of human rights' while supporting tyranny.

Vicuña’s mention of being 'devalued' reveals the deepest meta violence. As a 'dark, small South American woman,' she occupies the position of the Primal Race, colonized both in Latin America and Europe. The loss of her 400 sculptures was not just a physical loss, but an erasure of subjectivity. In a masculine-centric and white-centric narrative, her existence was defined as a 'guest' or 'visitor,' never the organizer. Even her institutional recognition at 69 feels more like a performative concession than genuine equality.

Most alarming is her observation of Chileans 'willingly' choosing leaders who deny rights. This 'willingness' must be questioned within the patriarchal and colonial structure. When life is termed 'resources' instead of 'life,' it is the result of language being weaponized and cognition being hijacked. From Pinochet’s boots to the privatization of AI, the logic remains: seize the power of interpretation and transform living existence into calculable assets. Any 'healing' that occurs only within a gallery, without dismantling the structure that forced women and South American artists to 'beg' for survival half a century ago, remains merely a sanitized PR version.
