The NYT Recipe and the Complicity of the 'Lazy'

When 'laziness' becomes an encouraged expression, subjectivity is quietly replaced by efficiency tools.

A simple tofu and broccoli recipe evolves into a game of 'efficiency' in the comments. Users discuss replacing manual chopping with a blender, labeling it as "lazy man's chopping." This self-branding of laziness is a textbook example of modern humans surrendering their subjectivity to tools.

In cooking, the process of finely chopping lemongrass is a tactile confirmation of the ingredient's biological properties. When people pursue a "less tedious" approach by throwing everything into a processor, they are no longer pursuing food, but an "optimal expression": achieving the result of "finishing dinner" in the shortest time. This "laziness" is not true rest, but an expression weaponized by the narrative of efficiency—it tells us that any physical effort that cannot be quantified in "minutes" is redundant.

More ironically, some complain they "didn't taste the lemongrass." This is the exact cost of replacing expression with tools: when you erase the texture of the process for the sake of efficiency, you lose the very soul that defines the dish. This "complicity of efficiency" is omnipresent—from AI poetry to pre-made meals. We play the role of the "efficient lazy person" to reclaim fragmented time, but subconsciously accept a form of structural violence: we lose the power to define "how to live," leaving us only with instructions on "how to finish quickly."
