Identity Theft or the Weaponization of Trust?
Many view this as a cyber issue or simple financial loss. But from the perspective of expression, this is a classic hijacking of identity. On social networks, your account is not a tool; it is your expression in the digital world—it defines who you are and who trusts you. Scammers aren't stealing accounts; they are stealing the "trust assets" you've built through long-term social gaming.
The most cynical part is the so-called "Hi mum" scam. Scammers precisely weaponize the power structures and emotional dependencies within the family. Santander's data shows that impersonating a son is the most successful tactic, followed by daughters. This is a textbook operation of meta violence: in the subconscious cognitive entry, the identity of a "son" often carries more weight and urgency than that of a "daughter." This structural cognitive bias becomes the most efficient harvesting path for fraudsters.
As for the police urging a switch to passkeys or biometrics, this is merely a structural attempt to counter direct violence. The real vulnerability is at the cultural layer: we are conditioned to equate "social media expression" with the "actual person." When the bond between expression and identity becomes this cheap and replicable, trust becomes a zero-sum game. Scammers use your identity to manufacture possibilities, while you become an object stripped of subjectivity in this existential war.
