Power Complicity Over a Civil Dinner: 'Free Speech' as a Strongman's Shroud
这种‘温和’实际上是一种 Complicity(共谋)。
This 'Dining across the divide' experiment by The Guardian is presented as a heartwarming exercise in democratic inclusion, but it is actually a textbook scene of Meta Violence. 24-year-old Ted plays the 'free speech absolutist,' while 58-year-old Nicky plays the 'gentle guide.' The narrative trap here is the reduction of structural oppression—rooted in power asymmetry—into a simple personal game of 'differing opinions.'
Ted's Free Speech Absolutism is a total scam. In a society where resources are unevenly distributed and the narrative is monopolized by masculine-centric structures, 'absolute free speech' has never been about protecting the marginalized; it is about ensuring that the powerful can diminish others without paying a price. When Ted claims he wants to 'look his enemy in the face,' he assumes a position of safety where he can 'face' someone without being physically or structurally destroyed. For the marginalized, the actual result of this 'freedom' is mental anguish and the further shrinking of their survival space. This gap between potential and actual safety is exactly what defines Violence.
Even more disturbing is Nicky's reaction. She attempts to dissolve the conflict through a patronising, maternal lens, suggesting that 'as he grows older, he'll tune in.' This 'gentleness' is a form of Complicity. She transforms structural violence into a 'cognitive bias of youth,' thereby subconsciously maintaining the status quo: the idea that the arrogance of the powerful can be cured by 'time' and 'education' rather than by a redistribution of power. In this framing, the victim's pain is defined as 'an inability to take offence,' while the oppressor's power is rebranded as 'the pursuit of liberty.'
The most ironic moment occurs during their discussion of the monarchy. Ted worships the Institution that has functioned for 1,000 years, while Nicky grudgingly accepts it for the tourism revenue. They both implicitly validate a system based on hierarchy and privilege—one through adoration, the other through compromise. This complicity is packaged as a 'pleasant evening' at a civil table, while those actually harmed by such institutions and 'free speech' are completely objectified as 'potential victims,' with no seat ever reserved for them.
