USS Abraham Lincoln: The 'Warrior Ethos' as Fuel for the Machine
When Trump claimed the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln was 'not nearly long enough,' he executed a textbook move of meta-violence: erasing physical limits and mental collapse from the narrative, replacing them with a masculine-centric story of 'victory' and 'readiness.'
Within Galtung's Violence Triangle, this carrier is a miniature laboratory of violence. The direct layer consists of the eight suicide attempts and jumps overboard. The structural layer is the 250 consecutive days at sea, food shortages, and medical neglect caused by a total failure in war planning. The cultural layer is the 'warrior ethos' that Secretary Hegseth seeks to restore. The logic here is sinister: if you break under abysmal conditions, it is not because the system is exploiting you, but because your 'warrior spirit' is lacking. This narrative transforms structural deprivation into individual psychological failure, granting the oppressive regime moral immunity.
The most repulsive complicity occurs at the top. The administration portrays soldiers as 'heroic war machines' in public, while treating them as disposable fuel in practice. When a sailor laments his father's detention by immigration authorities while forced into 12-hour shifts, the state brutally suppresses this existential tear under the guise of 'law.' In this structure, the sailor is completely objectified—no longer a human with a family, but a mere cog in a 'giant floating city.'
The Navy's promise to add 'entertainment equipment' and 'hygiene products' to the next carrier is mere performative concession. As long as the war narrative monopolizes the power of interpretation, and as long as the subjectivity of the soldier is demanded to be subservient to some unquestionable 'grand meaning,' a few gym machines cannot offset the existential void of 250 days without touching land. This 'optimization' is simply designed to make the next batch of fuel feel slightly more comfortable before they are burnt out.
