Senseless Violence is the Only Narrative the State NeedsSenseless Violence is the Only Narrative the State Needs
The police phrasing is telling: a “senseless act of violence.” In the logic of meta-violence, by defining violence as “senseless,” the state effectively removes it from the discourse of social structure, reducing it to individual madness or a random accident. But in the real world, bullets are never random; they are the output of structuralized hatred and power games.
This murder at a memorial service perfectly illustrates the nature of direct violence—it requires no logic, only execution. By emphasizing that “40 to 50 people, including children” were present, the police are weaponizing an emotional entry point to create a sense of “civilization being violated.” This narrative frames the violence as an assault on “collective remembrance,” steering public attention toward the individual mystery of “who did it,” rather than asking why firearms—tools of high-efficiency violence—can be so easily activated in a public memorial in this specific community.
When violence is labeled “senseless,” it becomes a natural disaster, an anomaly, rather than a product of structural violence. This complicity in narrative allows the public to wait for a “madman” to be arrested, while comfortably ignoring the power structure that allows these tools to circulate and forces marginalized communities into an existential war fought with triggers. “Senselessness” is simply a cognitive barrier manufactured by the powerful to maintain the illusion of order.
