Don't Mistake Investment in Female Bodies for Sporting Victory
Manchester United Women beating Liverpool is a standard sports narrative: a mistake, a lob, a comeback. But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this "good news" masks a deeper structural violence.
The perceived prosperity of the WSL is essentially a delayed investment by capital after realizing the commercial value of the female body as a cognitive entry point. United Women reformed in 2018; 250 matches are but a fragment of the century-long history of men's football. This "reformation" is a colonial logic: male clubs, controlling the definition of public space, decided to carve out a "secondary" annexed space for women and labeled it "empowerment."
We are conditioned to celebrate the success of female coaches like Eva Olid, but this is a cognitive trap. When a woman wins within rules designed by men (masculine-centric narrative), the system frames it as proof that "gender barriers are gone." In reality, the lack of resources in physiological limits, medical care, and even menstrual research remains the meta violence of this system. They fight on the pitch, while the pricing of their salaries, pitches, and broadcasting rights is still decided by men in boardrooms, complicity in maintaining the old order.
This 1-0 win is a progress in the Actual layer, but it doesn't shake the Structural foundation. True good_news isn't United beating Liverpool; it's when female athletes no longer need to "perform" a masculine version of toughness to earn respect, yet still possess equal pricing power over their own value.
