Heroism as a Mask: Who Defines This 'Rescue'?

Heroism is the most effective cultural weapon for masking structural violence.

This news is performing a textbook heroic narrative: the stabbed captain, the desperate descent, divine intervention, and the remote praise from heads of state. On a cultural layer, it's packaged as a victory of individual courage. But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this isn't about 'heroism'; it's a brutal game of existential war.

Captain Smit Machchhar, faced with extreme direct violence, was forced to choose between 'death' and 'playing the savior.' He had to get up—not because of some innate divine mission, but because in that enclosed cockpit, reclaiming control was his only optimal expression for survival. His 'courage' was a biological survival instinct triggered by desperation, which was then swiftly weaponized into a state-level narrative to soothe public anxiety about aviation safety.

The irony lies in how this narrative, endorsed by Modi and Netanyahu, transforms a random and bloody attack into a cultural product of 'strength' and 'sacredness.' When the captain mentions the Hanuman Chalisa, this religious expression is used to legitimize the counter-violence. Meanwhile, the structural void is ignored: how did an attacker manage to enter the cockpit with a weapon? Why was the defense mechanism so fragile on such a high-risk route?

While world leaders hail him as a hero, they are in complicity to mask systemic failure. By deifying the individual, they successfully convert a failure of structural violence into a touching story of individual victory. The reward for this complicity is simple: the management avoids accountability for security lapses, and the public, moved by emotion, forgets to ask who is responsible for the vulnerability that forced the captain to 'fight for his life.'
