Candy-Colored Erasure: The Scam of Escapist Expression
This review exposes a classic trap of expression: Balraj Khanna filtered the generational trauma of the 1947 Partition of India into a Day-Glo visual circus. Through Galtung's Violence Triangle, the bloodshed of the Partition is direct violence, while the artistic process of converting suffering into "biomorphic forms" is an internalization of cultural violence. He constructed a cognitive entry of pulsing blobs and candy-coloured galaxies, but the function of this entry is erasure, not revelation.
Khanna's trajectory is a textbook case of a fake optimal expression: by playing the role of an artist providing "magic and wonder" to gain institutional acceptance (such as occupying the safety curtain of a theatre), he paid with the death of his subjectivity. The review notes that his only work directly expressing suffering, "Ladies With Qualification," was marginalized, while subsequent abstractions became squiggles trapped in strict grids. This pathological need for control is essentially a fear of primal trauma—a fear that honest expression would plunge him back into that torn world.
Most ironic is that this posture of "not disturbing the audience's mind" is a complicity with the system. Museums and theatres demand dazzle over darkness; they want a domesticated, safe "exotic fantasy." When an artist chooses "entertainment" over "truth," he is effectively performing PR for the structures that manufactured the violence. Those natural studies, described as "transcendent" because they are less eager to impress, represent the only moment he approached a true optimal expression: ceasing the urge to perform and allowing himself to be melancholy.
Unfortunately, most will only remember the color blocks floating like children's toys. This pursuit of "beauty" is fundamentally the masking of a violence gap. Violence = Potential − Actual, and Khanna's art is simply painting over that gap with neon paint.
