Yet, at the end of her life, Rantzen herself became the vulnerable subject trapped by structural violence. She was gambling not only against cancer but against a legal system that refuses to legitimize assisted dying.
The most harrowing detail is her inability to fly due to frailty. In the current system, the quality of one's death depends on whether their physical capacity is sufficient to purchase a service. This misalignment between physical ability and legal access is a manifestation of meta-violence—society defines what 'normal death' is, and any attempt to deviate is pushed toward extreme physical costs.
She won the narrative in the public sphere, winning medals and fame, but in the final, most private battle over the disappearance of her subjectivity, she lost to the complicity of biology and the state.
