The Pricing Power of Taste and the Bourgeois Aesthetic Scam

Aesthetics are not about beauty, but a screening mechanism of who defines what is 'cool'.

This autumn food trend list from The Guardian is essentially a playbook for manipulating cognitive entry points. From Angel Delight croissants to Lao Gan Ma Camembert, these trends aren't an evolution of palate, but a typical weaponized expression. It tells the reader exactly which combinations signal that you are at the top of the social hierarchy this season.

The most absurd part is the calculated obsession with 'silly' and 'school cakes'. This is an arrogant form of aesthetic downward compatibility: having grown tired of refined fine dining, the bourgeoisie now 'articulates' and consumes the cheap, crude memories of the working class. This isn't a tribute to the common people; it's the consumption of them. By defining 'cheap' as 'cool', they execute another seizure of the pricing power of taste—only those wealthy enough with sufficient cognitive resources can eat something that tastes like 'wet twigs' and still believe they are leading a trend.

This aesthetic cycle is a closed-loop scam. From 'minimalism' to 'brutalism' and now to 'Bric-a-brac Boho', every step is a new screening mechanism designed to exclude others. When you attempt to gain identity by buying a specific tropical vinegar or attending a 'pottery dinner', you are simply voting for a narrative orchestrated by media and commercial teams. You think you are choosing a lifestyle, but you are merely performing a role predefined by the current trend.

This manufacturing of 'authenticity' traps people in the deepest form of discipline while they chase 'effortlessness'. The ultimate irony is dining in the dark wearing Simone Rocha where no one can see you; you are no longer consuming food or fashion, but a lonely self-suggestion: 'I know I am wealthy and cool'.
