The absurdity of this news lies in the attempt to erase structural violence through the application of direct violence. What are the students protesting? Overcrowded classrooms of 35, teacher shortages, and a grueling timetable from 8 am to 6 pm that robs them of sleep. In Galtung's formula, the gap between Potential educational resources and the Actual scarcity is the structural violence imposed on these teenagers.
Yet, the government's response is textbook: instead of closing this gap, they seek to mask it through "maintaining order." The Interior Minister and Prime Minister employ an anemic narrative, swiftly shifting the discourse from "resource scarcity" to "violent behavior." The moment students throw bottles, the government finds justification to deploy the CRS and BAC. This is a classic weaponisation of expression: by defining students as "irresponsible rioters," the state legitimizes its own violence. In their cognitive entry point, once a student wears a mask or throws a stone, they cease to be a "pupil" and become a hostile target to be "suppressed."
The most sickening complicity is found in the government cutting €54m from public spending while claiming students' anger is merely "exploited by politicians." This is a mask for meta-violence—using "republican duty" and "rationality" as cover for systemic resource plunder. When 15-to-18-year-olds face shields and batons while the government tweets about "responsibility," this rupture is itself a form of extreme cultural violence.
Fortunately, some refuse to be co-conspirators. The teachers who stood between the students and the police are attempting to create a space for Just Expressions with their own bodies. But the outcome of this existential war doesn't depend on how many bottles were thrown; it depends on whether that €54m budget gap is filled. If the structure remains, the 440 children detained today will simply become 4,400 tomorrow.
