He sold a vision of collective prosperity, using emotional connection to hedge against the sluggishness of policy implementation.
However, this 'home comfort' masks a brutal structural violence: Britain exists in a strategic no man's land post-Brexit. Burnham’s ambition to be a stay-at-home prime minister, delegating foreign affairs, is essentially an act of avoidance. He believes that as long as the domestic story is compelling, he can mute the noise of global chaos. But the contagion mechanism of global interdependency ignores how touching your narrative is; oil price spikes and bond market shocks—forms of direct violence—will swiftly pierce his social-democratic illusion and hit voters' pockets.
The most ironic part is his interaction with Trump. When Trump says he 'gets it,' it is not an endorsement of Burnham’s vision, but a predator’s routine confirmation that a new subordinate has paid the necessary tribute. In this asymmetrical power game, Burnham’s charismatic sway is useless. He is playing to win in the national league, forgetting that the stadium itself is defined by global financial and security structures. A vision that only works in one's own backyard, while remaining defenseless against external meta-violence, is nothing more than an expensive PR scam.
