Most repulsive is the narrative of 'drawing a clear line.' The Home Office claims a distinction between expressing a view and unlawful behavior, but the pricing power over that line remains solely with the state. When thousands are arrested for placards supporting Palestine Action, the line becomes a retractable ruler. This is a war over the manufacture of facts: the state defines who is a terrorist or a thug, then uses that definition to legitimize the stripping of human rights.
Do not be naive about the 'wake-up call' of public opinion. If the government pivots, it won't be because they've rediscovered the sanctity of human rights, but because the cost of restriction has temporarily outweighed the benefit in the existential war of power. True victory requires a transfer of the power of interpretation, not treating freedom as a commodity to be bargained for on a political scale.
