The Privilege of Satire and the Pruning of 'Civilization'
The BBC's decision to scrub blackface sketches from Mitchell and Webb's catalogue is framed as a clash between 'offensiveness' and 'freedom.' But this entire discourse is a manifestation of cultural violence. The debate centers on whether the sketches were 'satirizing' or 'practicing' racism.
This is a moot point. Regardless of intent, blackface is a tool of meta violence. It relies on a power imbalance where the white subject holds the explanatory power to define, perform, and mock the skin of the Other. When the comedians ask in their sketch, 'Is this racist?', they are exercising the 'privilege of the satirist': by acknowledging the offense, they claim a moral high ground that grants them the license to continue the offense.
BBC's editing is not 'woke' censorship; it is simple PR maintenance. It is a sanitized version of structural violence. By pruning a few branches, the system makes the overall narrative appear 'civilized' and 'harmless,' masking the fact that the underlying power structure remains untouched. This 'bowdlerism' creates an illusion of progress, while the power to decide what stays and what goes remains with the complicity of the institution.
Most ironic is the call for the BBC to invest in new comedy to 'explore the issues of our time.' As long as this 'exploration' is rooted in a masculine-centric narrative and Western-centric cognitive entries, it is merely a fresh coat of paint on an old house. The true optimal expression is not about deleting offensive clips, but acknowledging that the power to define the Other is, in itself, a form of violence.
