Labour, in the Starmer era, fell into a classic 'technocratic trap'—attempting to mask a loss of subjectivity with a logic of neutrality, objectivity, and rationality. When a party becomes 'too technical and pessimistic,' it effectively abdicates its power to define reality, becoming a mere administrative executor. This created a massive cognitive entry point for the right, like Reform UK, who excel at manufacturing simple, crude, and aggressive narratives.
Interestingly, Powell attempts to reclaim the progressive banner by promoting 'anti-misogyny' work and tackling deepfakes in schools. This precisely exposes the logic of structural violence: simplifying misogyny into a curriculum or a policy metric, attempting to solve it through 'embedding healthy relationships.' As she admits, you cannot simply teach your way out of misogyny. Misogyny is not a lack of knowledge; it is a manifestation of meta violence—the very foundation of the masculine-centric narrative at the cultural layer. If Labour's own power structure remains masculine-centric, then this 'anti-misogyny' in schools is a performative concession, using a cultural layer tweak to hide structural layer rigidity.
The so-called 'progressive alliance' is essentially a game of 'who defines progress.' When Labour hesitated on survival baselines like pensions and welfare, it was in complicity with the existing power structure. Now that they see the polls dropping, they are hurriedly repackaging 'values' as weapons. This shift from 'technocratic management' to 'storytelling' is not a return to values, but a tactical adjustment after realizing that 'technical logic' lost to 'emotional logic' in the existential war. They don't want to lead progress; they just want their ticket back into the game.
