In my framework, this is the collapse of the 'cognitive entry point'. Professional journalists are the bridge between the Potential (the full spectrum of facts) and the Actual (the reported facts). When the bridge is demolished, the gap becomes violence. By losing its grip on local nuance, the BBC forfeits its power to define 'what is a fact,' handing the interpretive power over to algorithms and the fragmented noise of social media.
The most cynical part is the complicity. Management slashes jobs while haggling over funding models with a government that has spent years using underinvestment to manufacture the illusion that the BBC is 'no longer necessary.' It is a perfect complicity: the state weakens public media's independence through starvation, while BBC leadership attempts to survive by performing the role of the 'cost-cutting CEO.' This 'fake optimal expression' comes at the cost of the death of subjectivity—the BBC ceases to be a public service and becomes merely a media firm gasping for air on a balance sheet.
This spiral is 'inescapable' because it follows the logic of meta-violence: to the centers of capital and power, the value of public media is not in how much truth it uncovers, but in how well it maintains a veneer of 'civilization.' Once the cost exceeds the value of that veneer, the institution is structurally discarded.
