When the government claims it will help the public “separate fact from fiction,” it is actually declaring: we define the 'fact,' and any narrative outside our perimeter is 'fiction.'
This is a dangerous weaponization of expression. In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is textbook cultural violence. By monopolizing the interpretative power over 'truth' through a statutory body, the state is constructing a new form of meta-violence. While Nigel Farage’s comparison to Orwell’s Ministry of Truth is high-performance political theater, it hits the mark: whoever holds the power to define 'disinformation' holds the power to erase dissent and designate enemies.
The most cynical part is the complicity. The cross-party backing makes this expansion of power look 'just.' When Labour, the Tories, and the Lib Dems align under the grand narrative of 'national security,' they are conspiring to build a new censorship apparatus. They are selling the public a scam: that to defend against external information war, we must surrender internal interpretative autonomy.
Promises not to target 'domestic political dissent' are meaningless in the face of structural power. Once the definition of 'fact' is centralized, any effective political dissent can be easily labeled as 'foreign-influenced' or 'misinformation,' thereby being legitimately erased at the cultural layer. This is no longer a game of truth versus lies; it is a battle for the pricing power of reality.
