When a single mother is forced to choose between 'paying rent', 'eating', and 'keeping warm', we are not looking at economic fluctuation, but a textbook case of structural violence. The gap between the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) and actual rents is the materialization of institutional violence: it is a calculated 'tax' forcibly extracted from the diets and health of the underclass.
The logic here is insidious. The government freezes allowances under the guise of 'fearing landlords will raise rents', effectively maintaining a perverse complicity. In this arrangement, the state preserves fiscal metrics by suppressing benefits, landlords harvest rent through market pricing power, and the ultimate cost is borne by individuals like Laura Braddock—who fill the gap by skipping meals and enduring cold. This is a classic weaponization of cognitive entry: using a distant, grandiose future vision to mask the specific violence happening now. In this narrative, current hunger is diluted into a statistical 'housing shortage' problem, and the shivering body of the individual is completely objectified.
This violence is layered. From the structural gap in allowances to the cultural narrative of 'resilience', finally manifesting as the direct violence of malnutrition and mental collapse. When a mother loses her parenting energy due to hunger, the violence has completed its colonization from physical space to mental space. This is not a 'hard choice'; it is a designed siege of survival.
