Dining Across the Divide: A Masculine Complicity in Politeness

When 'manners' become the sole metric of discourse, structural violence is erased by sentimental narratives.

This is a textbook performance of a masculine-centric narrative. Two 42-year-old white men in London—one a labor-aligned supervisor, the other a right-wing politician—eat pasta and pizza to signal their 'civility' through the trope of 'agreeing to disagree.'

The cunning of this narrative lies in reducing political struggle to a clash of 'personalities.' Alex’s 'personable' nature acts as a lubricant, making it hard for Chris to question him 'belligerently.' This is precisely how cultural violence operates: using middle-class social etiquette to mask the asymmetry of power. When they debate Net Zero or welfare cuts, they treat them as 'opinions,' while for the marginalized whose benefits are slashed, these are forms of direct violence.

The most ironic moment occurs when Chris briefly mentions the abuse faced by canvassers who aren't middle-aged white Anglo-Saxon males. While he identifies the inequality of identity politics, this insight is swiftly drowned out by the harmonious conclusion of 'swapping numbers.' This dinner proves that as long as the participants are on the winning side of meta-violence, they can collude through 'politeness' to downgrade structural violence into a quaint disagreement over policy.

This 'cross-divide' dining is a PR scam. It suggests that as long as we are polite, divides vanish. In reality, manners cannot resolve the predatory nature of resource distribution nor erase the oppression of the Primal Race. Politeness simply allows the powerful to maintain the status quo while claiming the labels of 'tolerance' and 'rationality.'
