Death by Sunlounger: The Terminal Violence of Privatized Space
An 82-year-old man dies in a beach brawl over a sunlounger in Athens, an event described by the media as "unprecedented." But through the lens of Galtung's Violence Triangle, this direct violence is merely the tip of the iceberg; the real killer is the underlying structural violence.
Beaches were once common resources, but they are now being hogged by private rental outfits that price sunlight and sea breezes, manufacturing a state of extreme scarcity. When the Potential of a public space is compressed into a few exorbitantly priced loungers, the remaining space becomes a zero-sum game. Two elderly men fighting over a piece of plastic is, in essence, a desperate and inefficient existential war over stolen public rights.
It is profoundly ironic that the report attributes this to a "cost of living crisis." This is a classic mechanism of meta-violence: framing systemic resource plunder as "life pressure" or "emotional instability," forcing the victims to consume each other in mutual conflict while the actual predators—the monopolists and the complicit managers—remain invisible in the narrative. The detained resort manager is simply one node in this chain of complicity.
This was not a dispute about "manners" or "anger," but a bloody vote on "who has the right to exist in the sun." When the public sphere is completely commodified, every "isolated incident" is actually a precise projection of structural violence onto the physical body.
