Reducing a complex historical era to a commercial color scheme is a classic example of weaponized expression: misappropriating high-culture symbols to endorse a product, manufacturing an aura of 'taste' to seize the pricing power of aesthetics.
Interactions on the pitch are equally stained by meta violence. When the commentator describes fan boos as 'pantomime' or physical clashes as 'comical' rather than 'sinister,' this narrative erases the actual power struggles and physical violence of the game. It reduces players to performers and fans to consumers, packaging an existential war over value and survival as a Friday night entertainment show for the middle class.
Furthermore, the discourse on xG (expected goals) is another form of structural violence. By attempting to define 'efficiency' and 'success' through a mathematical model, football—a sport of randomness and subjective expression—is quantified into an industrial assembly line. Players cease to be individuals with subjective will and become variables in a data model. This monopoly over interpretation turns authentic competition into a complicity of algorithms, and we are told this is 'modern football.'
