Trading Drivers' Sleep for Capital's Fuel Margins
The U.S. Department of Transportation's "temporary relaxation" of working hours is a textbook case of structural violence. Pushing the limit from 14 to 16 hours is called "flexibility" in government narratives, but it is "cost hedging" in the ledgers of capital.
The logic is primitive: global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical wars have spiked fuel prices. Faced with this gap, the power center chose neither to regulate prices nor to subsidize drivers, but to directly shave off the biological rest time of the workers. This is a predatory seizure of existential space—using the sleep and fatigue-related risks of drivers to plug the profit holes of energy giants and carriers.
Most cynical is how this is packaged as a "routine measure" for emergencies. When the "state of emergency" becomes a governance tool, it is weaponized: as long as a crisis is declared, the basic biological rights of laborers can be legally waived. In a 16-hour driving window, the driver's subjectivity is completely degraded into a mere cog in the fuel logistics chain.
The claim that this is acceptable "as long as required breaks are taken" is a total scam. The collapse of the biological wall under extreme fatigue and high pressure is irreversible. This waiver explicitly tells the bottom-tier laborers that their physiological limits are "waivable" to maintain the stability of fuel prices and supply for the elite.
