This is not merely a criminal case of abuse of power or lying; it is a textbook display of structural violence in action. An ICE agent firing into a man's leg through a door with children present, then fabricating a story about being attacked by a broom, is direct violence. But at the structural level, it is inevitable: when an individual is granted the power to 'deport' and 'purge,' the other is no longer a human, but a dehumanized target.
The most repulsive part is the political gambit over 'fugitive' status. Governor Abbott’s refusal to sign extradition papers is pure complicity. In this partnership, the perpetrator, the political patron, and parts of the judicial system agree on one thing: as long as the violence serves a specific political narrative—like mass deportation—the brutality is justified, the lies are 'reasonable mistakes,' and the evasion is merely a 'reassignment.'
This arrest happened only because a federal indictment broke the loop of complicity. Do not be naive enough to celebrate this as a victory for justice. This is just one extreme case that finally crossed a legal line. For the vast majority of those whose subjectivity was stripped during Operation Metro Surge, the gap between Potential and Actual remains vast. That gap is exactly what institutionalized violence looks like.
