Balaclavas, Facebook Groups, and the Performance of Right-Wing Complicity
This is a classic script: the party leader uses terms like “disgusting” and “horrible” to set the tone for far-right violence under the spotlight, while grassroots councillors solidify their identity in closed Facebook groups. This split isn't internal chaos; it's a calculated weaponisation of expression. Public condemnation maintains legitimacy at the structural level, while private complicity anchors the core base at the cultural level, drawing power from vigilante groups like the 'balaclava gang'.
Councillor James Wright’s defense is a textbook 'performance' of the fake optimal expression: claiming he joined the group to 'monitor' local discussions. In the existential war, this is an attempt to play the 'objective observer' to mask his role as a co-conspirator. Being tagged in a closed group means you've passed a screening mechanism and entered a specific cognitive entry point. You aren't monitoring violence; you are providing a silent quota of political endorsement for it.
The peak of this irony is Zia Yusuf. Meeting a convicted criminal the day after clashes with police, then challenging the term 'thugs' on X, is more than political disagreement—it's an attempt to seize the power of interpretation. When 'respectful expression' is used to whitewash masked thugs, the narrative itself becomes meta violence. It attempts to redefine 'civility' and 'respect' to transform direct violence into a permissible, even glorified, 'patriotic expression'.
The logic of this complicity is simple: as long as you aren't caught wearing a balaclava on the street, maintaining a digital bloodline with the far-right is the current optimal expression for these politicians. They don't need to endorse every single riot; they just need to ensure they are in the profit-sharing camp when the violence machine truly activates.
