The Triple Lock: A PR Scam and Structural Predation

Inflating pensions via public sector wage spikes is merely trading future structural poverty for immediate political appeasement.

The so-called 'Triple Lock' mechanism is framed in the news as a 'victory' for retirees, but viewed through the lens of structural violence, it is a sophisticated scam. By selecting the highest of average earnings, inflation, or 2.5%, the government isn't providing a safety net; it is playing a numbers game.

The most cynical complicity lies in the data composition: the 3.9% rise is heavily skewed by a 6.3% jump in public sector pay, while the private sector stagnates at 2.9%. The government is essentially using public sector inflation to pump up pension figures as political capital, while private sector workers are further squeezed by the cost-of-living crisis. This mechanism converts public sector privilege into a political tool, leaving the broader economy to bear the structural cost.

A deeper layer of violence is found in the frozen personal allowance. The pledge not to tax those relying solely on the state pension is a textbook example of performative concession. It creates a perverse divide: those who exercised agency by building private pensions are penalized by being pushed into a higher tax bracket. It is a direct punishment for those who sought an optimal expression for their future—the system uses fiscal drag to claw back their assets.

When a system quietly offsets nominal gains by freezing tax thresholds, the 'big winners' are merely prisoners fed with candy. The Actual has not moved toward the Potential; instead, the government has simply closed a narrative loop of 'care' at the cultural level.
