Right-wing politicians and some victims' families tried to turn the collective trauma of 9/11 into a cognitive entry point with one goal: to define who is a 'qualified' New Yorker, while pre-setting Mayor Mamdani as the outsider.
This logic is despicable. It employs the standard tools of cultural violence, forcibly equating the actions of a tiny extremist faction with the biological traits of an entire race. In the narrative of these protesters, Mamdani's identity as a Muslim is a 'primal sin.' They don't care what he has done; they care who he is. This is essentially a war over the power of interpretation: who has the right to represent the dead, and who defines what 'dishonoring the dead' means?
Most ironic is that this exclusionary behavior is wrapped in the cloak of 'commemoration' and 'justice.' This is exactly how meta violence operates—using a recognized 'civilized' or 'sacred' setting to legitimize the structural exclusion of a specific group. When protesters spit on reporters and attack the mayor, they are executing a subconscious complicity: creating a common enemy to mask their own frustrations amidst economic collapse and the opioid crisis.
Mamdani's attendance was a true optimal expression. He didn't fight back with opposing narratives but dissolved the aggression through Just Expressions of 'decency, grace, and tolerance.' However, this is not enough to tear down the established cognitive wall. As long as 'victim status' can be traded as a political chip for power, this scam—acting in the name of love to commit violence—will never end.
